Only the awesome ones possess this incredible –
Ability to hold on and try, try and try again;
Until they win at last, against all possible odds.
Pearls of sweat not wasted, their goal now reached.
Hard work and determination never defeated
Victory marks champions great, who had decided
Not to give up! Not even once in their odyssey.
Trying nineteen times, never losing hope precious
Twentieth time comes success, sweet like honey.
Passion takes a heart to a destination, glorious
Valiant heroes many, in our epics, unique
Tell us of their triumphs, after decades of-
testing times that preluded each one of-
their golden moments that arrived with a win.
Ramayana and Mahabharata narrate how –
kings and queens emerged victorious, enduring
harrowing times with courage and esteem.
Their valour finds no parallels in history
Bestowing upon generations to follow
Treasures of wisdom, examples aglow.
Modern science too has stories aplenty
On perseverance and patience, the duo
Who had held together hands and marched
Up onto the high dais of brilliant success
Edison had invented the electric bulb
But only after a thousand tests and trials.
He had believed he would see the light
At the end of the dark tunnel of unrelenting efforts
That would illuminate the whole world
And the dreams of centuries, its countless folk.
Students, scientists, sportspersons, singers some others
Showed perseverance, who took home the trophy to theirs.
Continuous trials made for many, success a reality
Men and women, persistent efforts in their capacity
Etched their names in history with a golden quill
And stay for ever its shining ink will.
‘Jataka tales’ holds in their collection
A beautiful story for anybody’s reflection
A caravan of tradesmen young and old
Merchants they were wise and bold
Crossed a desert with oxen and their wares.
Of the fine dust or the scorching heat,
None of them had the slightest fears.
They took rest when the sun was up
Travelled at night when stars would club
Showing their way, when the heat would drop.
Alas! One night their headman, off he dozed
His bull lost its way and the caravan followed,
Deep into the dry, arid desert they strayed
Soon water got scarce, food very less remained
Firewood was not left much, for the night cold
Expecting a gruesome death not very late.
Men grew uneasy, cursed their fate
A wise old trader who had a staff, rose
With hope twinkling in his tired eyes,
Roamed the sandy expanse in front of him;
Looking for some water to save their lives.
His mates thought he had gone mad
Losing his sanity in the face of death assured.
There! There was a clump of grass growing!
Proclaiming the presence of life!
Life giving water!
There was water somewhere nearby!
In this dry sandy desert!
Where the roots can find the wetness below.
Miracle! Other men saw the miracle too.
Their faces lit up.
Hope was there to get drops for life.
A young man there would dig,
Dig, dig and dig deep enough in search of water.
The elixir of life, they much needed.
Clank! Spade hit a rock. Hopes were lost.
The wise old man asked them not to stop.
Together they shook the rock and moved it
Miracle! The cool, the blue, life giving water!
Miracle in the desert! Pure clear water.
Water for the traders, water for the oxen!
To drink, to bathe! To cook and to wash!
Miracle in the desert! Perseverance pays
Never give up! Success might be very near!
